Summary:
Globalization is a process that removes national borders. When the
country's borders disappear, the national politics that are in the country are
then affected as well. For some country this is a good opportunity to expand
its power, but for other countries that do not have much influence or are not
dominant, they will certainly feel threatened because the autonomy previously
owned can be taken by someone else. Political globalization is the relationship
between 3 processes, namely, global geopolitics, global normative culture and
polycentric networks.
The most famous type of government is democracy. With democracy, the
people will benefit greatly because the highest power is in the hands of the
people. With the existence of a democratic system, people are given the
opportunity to participate in government, for example participation in choosing
a president and so on. Many people say that the popularity of democracy comes
from the process of globalization. There are so many countries that use this
form of government and even though they have not used it, the country must have
a community group that struggles to change its government in that direction.
Some people consider this democracy to be a 'new world order' from the United
States. The second dimension is global normative culture. An important key to
this dimension is political communication. Globalization causes political
communication to cross national borders as well. Indirectly normative culture
is created when one country communicates with other countries. The last is the
dimension of polycentric networks. This dimension is related to the
relationship between countries that cannot be separated and has various centers
within it. Global government is usually associated with the United States where
they have the power to give orders that affect other countries.
The concept of the state continues to develop. Now, old definitions are
disappearing and the country is becoming increasingly global. The state's power
over its territories is also disappear because there is power outside the country
that affects it. If viewed from an economic standpoint, the state must now
fight non-governmental forces, therefore a new concept called
'multi-governmental' emerged. This then makes us question the country's power
over its own territory in the era of globalization. The disappearance of
sovereignty also affects one's nationality. Nationalism has taken a new form
from before. Besides that, now someone is not only under the nation law,
because in some conditions international law become very strong and need to be
obeyed.
As we know communication is an important part of the concept of the
country. All things such as education, knowledge and media are carried out in
the form of communication. Likewise with politics. Politics can be done with
the help of communication. Politicians use communication to influence or
possibly make public opinion. Political and communication relations are then
also reflected when the public space is not only a place for discussion but
also the process of political occurrence. With the globalization of public
space then it turned into a global public where the topics of discussion varied
from human rights, environmental concerns and health.
According to the World Health Organization, "Civil society refers
to the space for collective action around shared interests, purposes and
values, generally distinct from government and commercial for-profit
actors". Mary Robinson, formerly of the UN High Commissioner for Human
Rights, said that the Global Civil Society is one of two superpower in this
world besides the United States. Global civil society will usually try to solve
problems that are contradictory in globalization dimension. The first is
between globalization which makes homogenization and vice versa, increases
tolerance for differences. The second contradiction is between power for
certain people and increasing autonomy for everyone. Besides that because of
its global scope, the problems discussed also global and use communication that
crosses the political border. The current global political economy structure
has undergone many changes. The nation state, in this context, is no longer a
single actor in international political economy. In the current era of
globalization, discussions about nation states have become obsolete because of
their role being replaced by international institutions which is a part of
Global Civil Society. The Global Civil Society is not regulated by the state
but is recognized by the state.
What was interesting / what did
i learn:
I feel that global civil society
is very important and influential, but what I find interesting is that the
author wrote that the Civil Society is not always on the good side. They do not
always fight for peace and togetherness. They have enormous autonomy and some
of them have lack of capability in using their autonomy or influences.
Discussion point:
With the rise of political globalization, conflict in a country can
occur due to interference from other nations. This can be very worrying because
it can destroy the unity of a country, especially a country that is still not
intact in its system of government. What can the state do to overcome this?
Its a good and interesting post, but I have one question and I want to know your opinion. Is culture can influence political system in one country?
ReplyDeleteWhen I catch your point right, you consider destabilising forces from foreign countries towards a specific country. Generally in my opinion this can only happen to nation-states, which are already in a unstable political situation. A destabile political situation in a country is mainly coursed by political mismanagement. So when a government already failed and then further belongs under bad international impact, the government would be inept to fight these impacts. A effective oppose needs a stable government, with the capable of acting.
