1. Summary

The Relationship between Globalization and Culture

In order to understand what is cultural globalization is we first need to understand what that two words means first. In general way globalization explaining about the rapidly developing and ever-densing network of interconnections and interdependencies that characterize material, social, economic and cultural life in the modern world. Globalization is something that makes everything easier to be accessed by other people from another countries, this connection is helped by the development of internet that makes it easier to be accessed by many people. The internet makes it really easy for people to across the international boundaries and connect them to people from the other side of the world, thus why it is also helping the economics of ones country to grow even wider by doing an import and export. This increasing connectivity also have an impact in our live, we as an individu also feel those impact in our daily lives such as when we use our mobile phone, internet, e-mail, and many thing. This also means that this connectivity started to change our lifestyle, such as the food that we eat, the movie that we watch, the music that we eat and many more. But not only the positive things that started to infused in our life, but it also can helped the negative things to spread such as terrorism, loans, etc.  So based on the articles understanding globalization as a generalized process of increasing connectedness helps us to keep in mind the multidimensional complexity of the process.

A Global Culture

What is a global culture? With all these culture globalization process it would be not weird if later there will be a single global culture. As because globalization makes everything easier and transferring culture is not an impossible thing, for example the Korean pop music is being consumed by many people all around the world. Not only from the entertainment aspect but also from the more serious aspect such as economics and politics. There would be so many positive things that can occurs in the future if there would be global culture but it’s also means that there would be a tendency for one culture to be more dominating than the other culture, such as the western, as we know right now western culture is quite dominating the world.

Deterritorialization

What is deterritorialization? The articles it said that deterritorialization means the significance of the geographical location of a culture – not only the physical, environmental and climatic location, but all the self definitions, ethnic boundaries and delimiting practice that have accrued around this – is eroding. To put it simple deterritorialization is the weakening of ties between culture and places (anthropology). Deterritorialization can be felt in our everyday lives as simple as such when we pick what to eat between Italian food, or Asian food, or Indian food for dinner. Or what beer to drink for the party. This examples makes us realize that whether we intend it or not we already absorb so many different cultures in our daily life, and this all because of the globalization.

Cosmopolitanism and Cultural Identity

Cultural identity includes gender, sexuality, class, religion, race and ethnicity, and nationality. This differentiations is the one that existed before the modern days. But for the modern one they usually not used this differentiations as the standard but rather they only just identified what they can see. If we understand this concept we can understand the other concept also like politics and economics without contradictions.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn ?

While I read the articles I found so many interesting thing that I didn’t know before. I learned that every concept is related between one and another and how all of it is making a one big concept. I also found that the term of global culture is also being talked by sociologist and it’s not only a mere words. There’s also a possibilities for it to really happened. And also I want to know better about deterritorialization, as from what I read we already occurs It right now on our daily lives. It’s fascinating to see that without us realizing, we already start to absorb another culture rather then our own and we think of it’s as a normal thing. I also wondering if this is a positive or a negative thing from the traditional culture  perspective

3. Discussion Point :

After reading the articles I really want to know whether the global culture could be possibly realized in the future? Because it seems so hard to actually realized that idea as there still so many people who hold tight their tradition, and refused the globalization. And also what are the criteria that makes the sociologist said that there is a possibility in the future for global culture? Are the sign is already visible now?
